Planting My Flag in Horror: The Long Road to Memoirs of a Monster Society

By Ray Perilloux

Somehow, I always knew horror would be where I ended up.

When Memoirs of a Monster Society first started taking shape, I was knee-deep in two other comics—both superhero titles that I may still revisit one day. But horror kept pulling me back in, like it always has. And honestly? It makes sense. I grew up in the 80s and 90s, surrounded by slasher flicks, video stores, and late-night frights. I’ve probably drawn Jason Voorhees more than any other character in my life—yes, even more than Spider-Man. That says a lot.

Originally, this project began as an attempt to create a slasher comic. We were calling it Memoirs of a Monster. It was built around the urban legend of the Hookman, and while I’m proud of what we managed to finish, it didn’t fully capture what we were trying to say. The art wasn’t there. The writing was rough. And when we got our first review, it was hard to argue with the criticism.

But the thing is… that criticism helped. A lot.

Me and my writing partner Newton Tony have been chipping away at this thing for four years now. We’ve spent thousands of dollars on printing, promotion, software, and gear. The first version of our comic got a few podcast mentions and scattered reviews—some encouraging, some hard to swallow—but it was all part of the growing process.

Now we’re calling this next version a self-reboot.
We’ve renamed it: Memoirs of a Monster Society.
And this time, it’s different.

We’re not just making a comic—we’re building a whole universe of horror stories, wrapped in urban legends, history, and the weird stuff nobody talks about. I’m still drawing (alongside a small team of killer artists), and Tony’s still writing. Only now, our vision is sharper. Our goals are clearer. We know who we are, and what we’re trying to do.

So, if you’re reading this, know that this blog won’t be updated every day. But when it is, you’ll be getting a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to build a monster comic from scratch—the late nights, the second guesses, the creative breakthroughs, and all the messy middle parts. This is the sausage-making, as they say.

We’re four years in and still grinding.
Still hungry.
Still haunted.

If you want to follow our journey—warts and all—Memoirs of a Monster Society is where we’ve planted our flag. And this blog? This is where I’ll be telling our story.
